How To Choose A Website Designer For Your Business

September 1, 2026 6 min readTamara Deshell Fisher

A website is not a brochure. It is the first impression, the first conversation, and the first conversion. Here is how to choose a designer who builds it that way.

Start with the outcome you want, not the software you like. A beautiful site that does not bring you customers is an expense. A site that converts is an investment. Ask every designer you meet what happens after the site launches. If the answer is silence, keep looking.

Look at their work, not their words. A portfolio tells you what they can build. A live site tells you whether it still works six months later. Visit the sites they have shipped. Load them on your phone. Fill out the contact form. See what happens next.

Ask about the platform. You are not buying a website. You are buying a system that lives on a platform. If you cannot update a single sentence without calling the designer, you do not own your site. You are renting it.

Ask about the engine. A website without follow-up is a storefront with no salesperson. The best designers build the site and the system that follows up with every visitor who raises their hand.

Ask about the price, and ask what it includes. A low price often means you are buying a file. A fair price means you are buying a business asset that works while you sleep.

Choose the designer who builds it and runs it. That is the difference between a project and a partnership. Make It Pretty. Make It Profitable.
